The book is impressive! Well done!!
Your book traces the experiences of the talented artists who were milestones in Patsy’s life and therefore in Patrick’s life. Above all, you trace the rise of Patrick’s career and his love for dance and acting and how it was impacted by his mother and mentor, Patsy. This is seen through the hearts and minds of those who loved Patsy and Buddy. And how that love fostered his own greatness. We are all products of those who have loved and respected us throughout our lives, and your book highlights the extraordinary men and women who were fortunate enough to share the spotlight with Buddy.
These interviews are a lasting testament to the influence Patsy Swayze had on so many elements in the performing arts, giving life and passion to the men and women who revolutionized the stage, film and television industries, inspiring so many to be “the best they could be.” As is quoted from Jaclyn Smith about Patsy: “Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for making me understand the discipline of what a career is, in that: It isn’t just performing, it’s the homework you do and the everyday carry-through.”
My favorite phrase is: “Pasty gave love. In Abundance.” That was Patrick! By understanding her —as she is revealed to us so masterfully in these interviews—we understand Patrick! How also the most talented people of his generation saw him, his untiring passion making him comparable to Gene Kelly.
I have been fortunate enough to work with many wonderful filmmakers in my career thus far. Some you may have heard of, others not. But they are all exceptional and timeless in their art. Vittorio De Sica, Sofia Loren, Roberto Rossellini and young Isabella, Richard Burton, Romy Schneider, Richard Harris, Trevor Howard, Kim Novak, Marlene Dietrich, David Bowie, Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, Karen Allen, Grace Jones, and even Tony Curtis at the end of his Billy Wilder heyday. And I am not just name-dropping unless it is to drop this one name: Patrick Swayze. Patrick is Truth. The cowboy’s need to survive at its purest. There was always palpable truth in his emotions even against the backdrop of Hollywood’s lies, deceptions, hypocrisy and false myths. Patrick is and has been for quite some time a genuine myth because he represents the humanity inherent in show business distilled to its essence.
In all my career, I have never met such a dedicated and passionate human being on and off the set. And that is refreshing to say the least. Patrick Swayze is that miracle that comes along only once or twice in any given generation. It’s my privilege to love him. Oscar Wilde once said: “We are all in the sewer but some of us are looking at the stars.” Patrick was always looking at the stars, no matter what cards life dealt him. Thank you Patrick for your inspiration, for being a hymn to life.

Patsy was the first one to integrate the world of dance for African Americans in Houston, Texas. This occurred in the late sixties and early seventies with Bill Chaison, Debbie Allen, Kathy Singleton, Dwayne Phelps, Iverson Polk, Bobby Walker, Veda Jackson, Ricky Odums, Ralph Hamilton, and me. Ricky Odums, Dwayne Phelps, Iverson Polk, Bobby Walker, Kathy Singleton, Veda Jackson, and I were known as the “Texas Seven” while performing in the Broadway show Treemonisha. This show was produced by the Nederlanders, Nelle Nugent, and the Houston Grand Opera, and choreographed by Louis Johnson.
This is an important book for students to have in order to learn about the history of African Americans in the world of dance.
INSPIRED is the feeling I take away from Sue Tabashnik’s tribute paid to the Brilliant teacher of Dance and all things having to do with the art of performing.
I am just one of those lucky and blessed people to have walked through the doors of Patsy Swayze’s dance studio in Houston, Texas; way back when. It is my honor to be among the many wonderful interviewees of this terrific book!
My entire childhood was spent knowing and loving Patsy and her entire family. And being trained as a triple threat performer infused with Patsy’s passion for theater.
Again, I am just one of the countless people whose life’s dreams were molded and shaped by Patsy‘s selfless spirit!
You will be in awe of what you learn of such unique character in a great, great lady who just happened to be the Mother of the gifted Patrick Swayze.
I must admit, I knew very little about Patsy Swayze. I did know that she was Patrick Swayze’s mother, but her career and reputation as a dancer, dance instructor and choreographer were very new to me. So I wasn’t sure what to expect as I turned to the opening pages of this book. By the time I finished the acknowledgements, I felt that I had been able to learn about this amazing woman through the eyes of those who worked with her, learned from her, and loved her. Many all at the same time.
The author, one who I know first-hand, is an ardent and devoted fan of all things Swayze, has put together a book that only a true fan could. She manages to paint an honest and loving picture of the woman who had such great influence on her megastar son by gathering personal, heartfelt, knowledgeable details from authentic first-hand sources.
It was an enjoyable read. I recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in the Swayze story, and I believe true fans will find it fulfilling and enjoyable.

I didn’t know much about Patsy Swayze before reading this book, but the variety of interviews from people who knew and loved her over the years and beautiful pictures show what an incredible woman she was. Simultaneously tough and demanding while also loving and generous, it’s fun to read the stories and gain some more insight into her career and her most famous son, Patrick “Buddy” Swayze. I appreciate the author’s work in documenting her legacy.

This book is jam packed with the life of Patsy Swayze if you did not know her in life. This book covers her in detail. She was a remarkable woman. I felt like I knew her too. You can feel the heartfelt missing and appreciation of all those who spoke of her. Good read and very informative.
A wonderful book showcasing two incredible legends. I had such a good time reading the book, bringing back memories of Patsy, Buddy and their zillions of mentees, friends and family. In a post-COVID world, it was especially comforting. I was able to reconnect with so much of my theatre past. It just spawned so many wonderful things.

I read and loved the previous biography Tabashnik wrote about Patrick Swayze, and this is certainly one I’m thrilled to add to my library collection. Packed with gorgeous pictures, personal anecdotes, and beautiful words, this book touches on the life of a woman who gave her heart and soul to the world of dance.
Throughout the book, Tabashnik gives readers an incredible collection of stories narrated by various celebrities and friends and family of the Swayzes. Not only is this a life worth reading about, but it’s written in such a conversational way that it felt like a friendship was blooming with each page. The pictures add a whole additional element of nostalgia that drew me into Patsy’s life.
A must-read for anyone who enjoys biographies, dance, or simply a beautiful book.

“I just finished reading “Patrick Swayze The Dreamer” by Susan Tabashnik, and I absolutely loved it!!! This book shows a side of the actor that many people may not know. Having followed Patrick for years, as a fan, and later, as a member of the International Patrick Swayze Fan Club, I got to know that side somewhat.
But I know many of his fans never did. He was so much more than Johnny Castle, Dalton, Orry Main, Tiger Warsaw, Bohdi, Charlie Barker, or any of the many other characters he portrayed throughout his career.
